Hello! I'm Jennifer.

I am an Information Studies graduate student at the University of Texas, graduating in May 2020. I am specializing in archives, library science, and museum studies.

I studied history and sociology as an undergraduate, and through my research I quickly developed a great appreciation for libraries, local history, and cultural heritage. I began working at the State Historical Society of Missouri, which introduced me to the world of archival work. I learned that I could do so much more with my history degree than I had previously believed. I then went on to work at the State Historic Preservation Office of Missouri as a student archivist, which prompted my decision to enroll in graduate school and begin pursuing a career in archives.

I was fortunate to work as a student employee at the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History, the Catholic Archives of Texas, and University of Texas Libraries. These positions gave me invaluable "real world" experience and the opportunity to practice what I had learned in school. I also learned how to work efficiently with patrons and collaborate effectively with colleagues. I completed several practical hands-on projects during my two years of graduate school, some of which are featured on this website. I am currently working with a librarian at the Dell Medical School library to complete my final capstone project, an online and open-source catalog for a collection of historical textbooks.

In my graduate courses and part-time student archivist positions, I developed skills in the areas of archival processing, reference, digital content management, cataloging, metadata, database management, and taxonomies. My ultimate career goal is to put these skills to use and serve as a resource for my community as an archivist or librarian.

RECENT PROJECTS
PROJECTS
Dell Medical School Library Catalog

I created a comprehensive catalog for the Dell Medical School Library's collection of historical textbooks. I pulled MARC records from the National Library of Medicine, cleaned up metadata as necessary, and enabled easy circulation services for library patrons using LibraryThing's TinyCat platform.

Archival Processing: William Robert Hamby Family Papers, Austin History Center

I processed a collection of family papers from start to finish with a group of other archives students. This included rehousing materials as needed, creating a processing plan, and researching genealogy. Our final deliverable was an encoded finding aid for the Austin History Center.

Undergraduate Honors Theses Database Design

Worked with a group to create a database from the ground up for the University of Texas Libraries. We used CSS style sheets, MariaDB, mySQL, HTML, and PHP to create a functional and searchable database of the library's collection of undergraduate honors theses.
